For couples to truly benefit from the collaborative process they need to accept that they are active participants and are offered a 'safe environment' in which to discuss their financial position, develop an understanding of their financial options and the implications of a financial settlement. In order to do this there is a need for a financial neutral to facilitate such discussions and ideally this falls to a financial consultant that has no loyalty to any of the parties involved.
The key points to know about financial neutrals are:
-
They will not get involved in the dispute.
-
They have no previous or existing relationship with the parties involved outside of the collaborative process.
-
They have no interest in the outcome of any discussions.
-
They take an educational/facilitator role and are totally unbiased.
-
They are not involved in the implementation of any of the agreed settlement options.
-
They are trained in the collaborative process.
